Why it matters on a barndominium

A barndominium is a finished home. Once the slab, drywall, and cabinets are in, the posts are sealed behind them. If a buried wood post rots, the repair means cutting concrete and opening finished walls. Concrete in the ground removes that risk.

Why wood posts fail in horse barns

Image
Horse barns stay wet at ground level. Stalls are watered and cleaned daily, wash racks drain toward the post line, and urine soaks into the soil. Buried wood rots below grade where you cannot see it. Replacing a post later means jacking up a barn with horses in it.

Common Questions

What if my frost line is deep? Column extenders attach to the base of the column to add embedment depth.

What about high wind areas? Uplift anchors bolt to the base of the column for added holding strength.

My plans show a slab or stem wall. Can I still use your products? Yes. Sturdi-Wall® brackets anchor wood columns to the top of the concrete. Tell us which foundation your plans show.

Will my engineer accept it? Send them the ICC-ES report and our design guide with calculations. Both are free to download.

How heavy are the columns? 165 to 345 pounds each, depending on the model. Most crews set them with a skid steer or loader.

Can the slab pour against the columns? Yes. The slab pours against concrete instead of wood.
