Why hay barns need it

A hay barn protects a crop you cannot replace until next season. Most hay barns are open on one or more sides, so rain and snow reach the post line and wind pulls up on the roof. Wood posts buried in that wet ground rot below the surface. Loaders and bale wagons also bump posts every season.

Installation

Auger the holes, place the footing your plans call for, set the columns, and backfill. There is no concrete truck for the posts and no cure time before framing, so the barn can go up between cuttings.

Options for open-sided buildings

  • Uplift anchors bolt to the base of the column to resist wind uplift.
  • Column extenders attach to the base when your design needs more embedment. Concrete poured around the extender forms a combined footing and uplift anchor.

Common Questions

Do I need a different footing? No. Use the same type and size of footing you would use under a wood post.

How heavy are the columns? 165 to 345 pounds each, depending on the model. Most crews set them with a skid steer or loader.

Can I fix rotted posts in my current hay barn? Yes. Rotted posts can be cut off and set on new precast columns one after another, with no wait for concrete between posts.

Is any treated wood buried? No. The columns are made from recycled materials and contain no toxic chemicals.

Will it work with a building kit? Yes. Give your builder or kit supplier the model that matches your post size.
