Why wet soil ruins wood posts

Wood rots where it stays damp. On sites with a high water table, clay, poor drainage, or heavy rain and snowmelt, the soil around a buried post stays wet most of the year. Treated wood slows the rot and does not stop it. The damage happens below grade, out of sight.

Installation

The columns set in augered holes the same way wood posts do. There is no concrete truck for the posts and no cure time before framing. Use the same type and size of footing your plans call for under a wood post.

Setup for high-moisture sites

  1. Place a barrier between the treated wood post and the steel bracket.
  2. Use stainless steel fasteners in the bracket and on splash boards.
  3. Backfill the bottom of each hole with tamped stone before setting the column.
