Why wood posts fail in horse barns

Horse barns stay wet at ground level. Stalls are watered and cleaned daily, wash racks drain toward the post line, and urine soaks into the soil. Buried wood rots below grade where you cannot see it. Replacing a post later means jacking up a barn with horses in it.

Why riding arenas need it

Image
Arena footing is watered to control dust, which keeps the ground along the walls damp. Wood posts buried in that soil rot below the surface where nobody sees it. An arena column is hard to replace because it sits behind kick walls and under a long truss.

Installation

Your builder sets the columns in augered holes with standard post-frame methods. There is no concrete truck for the posts and no cure time before framing. Use the same footing your plans call for under a wood column.

Where footing is watered often, place a barrier between the treated wood and the steel bracket and use stainless steel fasteners.

Options for wind and depth

  • Uplift anchors bolt to the base of the column to resist wind uplift.
  • Column extenders attach to the base when your design needs more embedment than the standard column.

Common Questions

Does it work for covered arenas with open sides? Yes. Add uplift anchors where your engineer calls for them.

Will my engineer accept it? Send them the ICC-ES report and our design guide with calculations. Both are free to download.

Can I attach kick boards and splash boards? Yes. Splash boards fasten to the concrete with drive anchors.

Can I use the same columns for an attached stall barn? Yes. The same models work for both.
